Yeadon residents have thanked their MP Alex Sobel for stepping in to rescue the Christmas lights.

Organisers had a major problem as the lamppost feeding lights in the square stopped working. The estimated fix was 25 days which would have meant that the lights were not working over the Christmas period.

Mr Sobel, the MP for Leeds North West, stepped in to ensure that contractors were on site at 7am the next morning and the lights were fixed within two days instead.

Organiser Julia Briggs said: “Thanks to Alex Sobel, Yeadon Town Hall Square is lit up this year. We have leased some lights from Leeds City Council and unfortunately due to a lamppost issue, three lampposts were not lit. The main lamppost in Town Hall Square was in darkness and could not be fixed before Christmas where the estimate was 25 days. We contacted Alex’s team and he stepped in and spoke to the correct people. Thanks to him and his office, the problem was dealt with within 2 days not 25 and Town Hall Square is now lit up for Christmas.”

Mr Soble drew the raffle prizes on Friday, December 11 in the Town Hall, which was live streamed on Facebook. The proceeds of the raffle, which should be approximately £4,000, will be split, after expenses, between Yeadon Town Hall, which has been closed since March, and the Christmas lights next year.

Julia Briggs said: “The new Yeadon Christmas Committee have struggled, as we all have, with fund raising for the Christmas lights. The businesses and people of Yeadon and surrounding areas have been so generous not only to the lights but also towards the Big Christmas Raffle organised by the new Yeadon Christmas Committee.”

Mr Sobel said: "It was a great pleasure to help the wonderful team of people who have worked so hard in ensuring Christmas lights in the most challenging of circumstances. On behalf of the residents of Yeadon, I would like to thank them as well as all the businesses who contributed for their community spirit and dedication.”
