TRAVEL to Shropshire for people living in Wales is set to be permitted after new travel rules come into effect from Friday evening.

First Minister of Wales Mark Drakeford announced that from 6pm on Friday, December 4, travel between Wales and other areas of the UK with high rates of Covid-19 cases will not be allowed.

New travel guidance will state that travel across the border will be permitted to areas with lower rates of the virus.

However, people in Wales are being strongly advised not to travel to other areas of the UK, as the four nations continue trying to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Are people from Wales allowed to travel into Shropshire?

UNDER new rules which will be in place from Friday, December 4 at 6pm, people in Wales will be permitted to travel into Shropshire.

However travel across the border is still being strongly advised against in the latest travel guidance issued by the Welsh Government.

Those visiting the region from Wales are to adhere to restrictions in place in Shropshire when in the area.

Where else will people living in Wales be permitted to travel to?

PEOPLE living in Wales will be permitted to travel to areas in England which are currently in Tier One and Tier Two restriction level.

These areas include counties close to the Anglo-Welsh border, including Shropshire, Cheshire West and Chester, and Herefordshire.

As for Scotland, travel into areas subject to Level One and Level Two restrictions will be permitted.

Despite travel being permitted, the Welsh Government has strongly advised against travel to these areas with lower rates, to avoid the risk of people taking the virus with them.

People visiting other areas in the UK from Wales must abide by local restrictions upon arrival.

Where will people living in Wales not be permitted to travel to?

RESIDENTS of Wales will not be permitted to enter areas in Tier Three restriction level in England.

Tier Three areas in England include Birmingham and the Black Country, and Greater Manchester.

Travel will also not be permitted to Level Three and Level Four areas of Scotland.

All travel to Northern Ireland, which is currently in lockdown, remains prohibited.

What did the First Minister say?

MR DRAKEFORD confirmed there will be no restrictions on travel within Wales, but insisted some restrictions on travel across the border were necessary.

He said: “There will be no restrictions on travel within Wales but we need to have some restrictions on travel across the border to those parts of the UK where infection rates are high to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

“We are also advising people in Wales not to travel into those parts of England and Scotland where the infection rate is lower, to help prevent them taking coronavirus with them.

“Coronavirus doesn’t respect borders – we all have a part to play in keeping Wales and the UK safe. Please think carefully about where you are going and what you are doing. This virus thrives wherever we come together with others.

“Taken together with our other measures, these travel restrictions will help to keep us all safe.”

When will the travel restrictions be reviewed?

THE travel restrictions are likely to remain in place until at least January 2021 but will be kept under constant review.

International travel restrictions will continue and are also likely to remain in place until at least January, but will be kept under constant review.

All travel restrictions within the UK will be suspended between December 23 and 27 to allow people to meet members of their Christmas bubble.

People travelling to and from Northern Ireland will be able to travel the day before this period starts and the day after.
