YEADON’S ward Councillors have stepped in to ensure Christmas cheer in the form of festive lights for Town Hall Square, to be switched on at the end of lockdown.

“Yeadon’s Christmas Lights used to be funded by Leeds City Council”, said Cllr Sandy Lay. “Several years ago they stopped the money and since then the lights have been provided by a group of volunteers. This year has not been a good one for voluntary groups and the Yeadon Lights committee has not able to fund raise to pay for the usual display in town. This would have meant very few lights “.

“When we heard this we felt we had to do something”, said Cllr Colin Campbell. “After some discussion we were able to obtain a grant from the North West Community Committee and Leeds Lights agreed to erect a series of lamp post motifs in Town Hall Square along with festive lights for the trees”.

Cllr Ryk Downes added:”We appreciate that this will not be as many lights as residents would like but it will ensure Yeadon does not lose out this year. Next year hopefully things can back to normal and the Lights committee with local support can come back with a super display”.
