OTLEY residents are being reminded to join a Clap for Christmas next week.

The Town Council is urging people to applaud for a minute from their homes at 7pm on Monday, November 23 - when the Christmas lights will be turned on.

Normally the event would be marked by a festive celebration in the town centre featuring live music and fireworks.

But the coronavirus restrictions meant the switch-on evening had to be cancelled.

The Clap for Christmas idea was inspired by the weekly Clap for Carers that was held during the first national lockdown to show our appreciation for the NHS and other frontline workers.

As well as marking the switching on of Otley’s Christmas lights it is intended to give people a chance to celebrate the season and thank the NHS or a local business - or to remember a loved one.
