CHRISTCHURCH, Ilkley, are making a poppy display as part of Remembrance Day commemorations for 2020.

Volunteers are making poppies from up-cycled and decorated plastic, and they will be displayed in front of Christchurch, on the Grove, towards the end of October. Weather and wind permitting the display will stay in place for about three weeks. The display will have three trails of poppies; two of red and one of blue.

Bridget Pitcairn said: “On Remembrance Day we remember and thank the Armed Forces. In 2020, we will also remember and give thanks for the service and dedication of all key workers who keep our country going during lockdown. We particularly remember those who have died in their service during the Covid-19 war. We especially thank the health workers and carers in the NHS who are still visibly and heroically fighting on the front line of this Covid-19 health war. To reflect this, in addition to the traditional red poppy, a blue poppy has been made. It is designed using the blue and white colours of the NHS logo. The blue poppies help us remember the service of all key workers. The Christchurch poppy display is to reflect that we remember and thank both the Armed Forces and Key Workers. “While in Covid restrictions there can be no gathering of people. But it is hoped that from a distance along The Grove, and socially distanced from non-family or ‘non-bubble’ friends, everyone can see the display, and take a few moments to remember and give thanks.”
