FOLLOWING Philip Davies’s comments reported in last week’s paper I wonder what he thought of the latest press conference suggesting that unless we do something to curb the spread of Covid we will be seeing 50,000 cases a day and a return to 200 deaths a day.
He does not seem to understand the mortality rates for flu (0.1%) and Covid (3-4%) which means that allowing the disease to spread by leaving people to carry on with normal life will inevitably lead to a huge spike in deaths.
We only need to look back to the Spanish flu pandemic after the First World War to see that the second wave was more deadly than the first.
No doubt had the Government’s much vaunted ‘world beating’ track and trace system been in place we might be in a better position but given that only half the contacts are actually reached and figures suggest that only one fifth of people asked to self isolate are actually doing it we have been badly let down.
It would also be helpful if senior Government advisors such as Dominic Cummins followed the rules otherwise people will believe that there is one rule for them and one for us.
It is up to all of us to stop nit picking the rules and for all of us to follow the instructions and then we might actually beat the virus.
