FED-UP residents are calling on Yorkshire Water to fix a problem which causes persistent flooding.

People living on Old Hollings Hill in Guiseley say the road floods whenever there is a heavy downpour. The problem began at the end of June when there was heavy rain and the pavement gave way on one side of the road.

Local people say Yorkshire Water came and put a barrier around the damage but haven’t done anything since.

Resident Steve Wright said a neighbour living opposite the damage now has to permanently keep a stock of sandbags, provided by Yorkshire Water, which she puts out whenever it rains.

He said: “There is a dip in Old Hollings Hill, just before it joins Park Road, that now floods every time there is a heavy downpour. The pavement on one side gave way at the end of June, due to the force of the water underneath it, and this is where it flows out from whenever it rains.

“Yorkshire Water put a barrier around the damaged pavement at the time, but haven’t done anything since, despite endless pleas from residents. It’s a disgrace that the company has chosen to ignore this for almost eight weeks.

“I know the people living opposite the affected area and they have spent all summer barricaded behind a wall of sandbags and panic whenever it rains.

“They shouldn’t have to put up with this. Plus, motorists don’t realise how deep the water is and lots of cars have broken down trying to drive through it.

“With the end of summer approaching, the weather is only going to get worse, so Yorkshire Water have to take responsibility, fix the drains and repair the damage now.”

A Yorkshire Water spokesman said:“We appreciate that any type of flooding can be unpleasant and have carried out repairs on our network in the Old Hollings Hill area in recent weeks.

“Unfortunately, the recent weather conditions led to damage to the footway. We have now completed our investigations and will be repairing the footway as soon as possible.”
