AN annual horticultural event due to take place next month has been cancelled.

Harden Beck Horticultural Society had planned to stage its 59th show on September 13.

But due to the ongoing coronavirus situation, organisers have decided not to go ahead.

Society chairman, Andy Macdonald, said: “The decision was put off as long as possible but, despite some lifting of lockdown restrictions and a constantly changing situation, things have not improved sufficiently to allow the show to safely go ahead.

“At a time when gardening, home baking and developing skills making arts and crafts have become increasingly important for people, it’s ironic that a show celebrating such cannot go ahead.

“But the health and safety of our members, volunteers, exhibitors and visitors is our priority.”

The society thanks members, sponsors and the community for its continued support.

And it has pledged to continue working to develop the society and promote new ideas.

Mr Macdonald added: “Hopefully next year’s show will be a bumper event and a focal point for reconnecting and bringing our community together.”

The society was rejuvenated earlier this year when an appeal for new helpers brought an overwhelming response.
