GROUPS and landowners in South Craven could receive cash support to plant trees.

The Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust is offering grants for woodland creation schemes in the Dales and surrounding areas, including South Craven.

Funding would cover the cost of fencing as well as planting and can be for projects of any size.

The programme, which is backed by the People’s Postcode Lottery, forms part of the trust’s Together for Trees campaign. It aims to plant an additional 40,000 trees this coming winter to reach a target of 100,000.

Carol Douglas, woodland officer at the trust, said: “We’re delighted to be offering support to those individuals and groups who want to create beautiful woodlands that everyone can enjoy.

“This is a key part of our Together for Trees campaign as well as providing an opportunity for people to get actively involved with trees and woodlands and the social benefits they have to offer.

“If you have a desire to create woodlands for the future then please get in touch for an initial conversation about the process.”

People’s Postcode Lottery players have raised nearly £2.5 million for the trust since 2009.

Will Humpington, for the lottery, said: “Planting trees is one of the most important things we can do to mitigate the effects of climate change so I’m delighted that players are supporting this campaign.

“The creation of woodland is vital not only for wildlife and the environment, but for wellbeing and health too.”
