WE all need optimism in these difficult times, and the Dales Council League have provided some, by sharing their hope that they will be able to squeeze in half a season of cricket.

League secretary Ron Mackenzie has sent a message to all clubs, stating that they should regard fixtures in April and May as being cancelled.

However, although recognising that games in June may go the same way, there is a hope that matches can begin on week 12 of the scheduled fixtures on Saturday, July 4.

The message from the league states: “The executive committee are not giving up hope of some cricket this year, but are unsure of when the season can get underway.

“As a first step, all fixtures in April and May should be regarded as cancelled and, as things develop, then June fixtures may go the same way.

“With fingers crossed, we hope there will be a chance to start with the fixtures for the second half of the season at week 12 on July 4.”

The statement went on to say: “In the light of progress with the lockdown procedures in controlling the spread of the virus, the executive committee will decide how we will proceed with the cup competitions.

“The first-round matches will be postponed, at least, at the beginning of May but it is possible both competitions will be cancelled for this year.

“I can confirm that the pre-season meeting that was due to be held on April 9 is postponed indefinitely, as is the umpires’ meeting from the week before.

“Further information will be issued as soon as it is available

“Take care, and keep washing your hands.”
