UNSAVOURY language at a Keighley pub is boosting charity.

A 'swear box' introduced at the Great Northern has raised £732 for Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice Manorlands.

The fining scheme was launched late last summer as a fun initiative by Keith and Lisa Meegan, landlord and landlady at the pub in Halifax Road, Ingrow.

And since then, the collection can has needed emptying regularly.

Manorlands Riddlesden fundraising group members Bob and Lesley Tole, who manage all the hospice's collection cans in Keighley, praised the Great Northern venture.

"The pub's can has become the most lucrative in town!" added Lesley.

Andrew Wood, community fundraising manager at Manorlands, thanked all those involved.

"Whilst we can’t be seen to be encouraging bad language we hope the Great Northern crowd keeps contributing towards the care we provide locally when people need us the most," he said.

"If any other pubs or businesses want to introduce a similar system, please get in touch as we’d be happy to provide a can."

Manorlands supports patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families at the hospice and in the community, across an area covering Craven, Airedale and Wharfedale as well as parts of Bradford.

All services are free to patients and their loved ones, but it costs £10,000 a day to keep the hospice doors open – or £3.6m a year.

Only a small part of the cost, £1.2m, is covered by statutory funding.

Most of the funds have to be raised through voluntary donations.
