NEWS of a visit from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Bradford was all the excuse that children from Moorfield School and Nursery in Ilkley needed for a train ride and walk to Centenary Square.

Reception and Form 1 had a long, chilly wait, but they kept warm and their spirits high by singing, dancing, playing tig around Centenary Square and entertaining other members of the public who had come to see the special guests but enjoyed chatting to the children.

Whilst the Duke and Duchess held their meeting inside City Hall, the children caught the eye of a Palace worker who invited them over the barriers, recognising their dedication, having been the first people to arrive at City Hall that morning. The excitement mounted as the Duchess came over to speak to the children, thanking them for coming.

“She touched my hat and told us how much she liked our uniforms and asked how old I was,” said Alice in Reception.

A few of the children and staff even got to shake her hand.

"I've told her that she can't wash her hands ever again," one of the mum's joked.

The children and staff at Moorfield would like to thank the West Yorkshire Police on duty that day for doing such a fantastic job; they looked after everyone there, turning the occasion into something very special.
