A MAN who thought the stun gun he bought on eBay was a powerful torch has been sentenced to a 12-month community order.
Yasir Khan was being “more stupid than sinister” when he openly purchased the prohibited firearm, Bradford Crown Court heard.
Khan, 23, of Malsis Road, Keighley, pleaded guilty to possession of the stun gun between January 25 and October 19, 2018.
Police found the weapon when they searched his home, the court was told.
Khan, who made no comment to the police in interview, had no similar convictions.
His barrister, Ben Thomas, said the man who sold Khan the stun gun was given a police caution even though he was advertising a large number of weapons for sale.
Khan bought it thinking it was “a powerful torch”, and then panicked and kept hold of it, Mr Thomas stated.
The Recorder of Bradford, Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC, said: “It does seem more stupidity than sinister.”
Khan was sentenced to a 12-month community order with 150 hours of unpaid work, £100 prosecution costs and a rehabilitation activity requirement with the probation service.
