YEADON has a new centenarian.

Elsa Marks - formerly Scott - celebrated her 100th birthday on New Year’s Day, 2020 with family and friends.

Born in Yeadon, on what was Haw Street, a century ago she has lived her whole life in the town where she worked as a weaver for most of the local woollen mills.

Elsa taught herself to play the piano and accordion and after the Second World War sang in clubs with a group of other artistes. More recently she and her husband, Jack ran a successful sequence dance club in Yeadon Town Hall for many years.

The couple also raised considerable amounts for local charities through the dances and held a successful Millennium Dance at the hall. After Jack’s death Elsa continued with the dance club until she reluctantly retired, at 90.

She has lived in the extra care flats at Wharfedale View for the last three years - and is the first resident there to reach their hundredth year.
