A CLOSURE order has been placed on a property that was causing chaos for neighbours.

Following ongoing problems of anti-social behaviour and criminal activity at an address in Benfleet, Castle Point Council served a Closure Order on Wednesday.

This means that access to the council owned property in Manor Road will be prevented for anyone other than the tenant and their family.

The successful application was made at Southend Magistrates’ Court under the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014.

This act allows quick closure of premises which are being used to commit serious nuisance or disorder.

The order will remain in place for three months and breaching it is a criminal offence.

This means that if the tenant brings in anyone but members of their family they will likely face prosecution by the police and council.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “Castle Point Council was assisted by the Castle Point and Rochford Community Policing Team.

They supplied evidence to support the application and accompanied council staff to serve the order on the property in and check it was being adhered to.”

The policing team stated that police officers will continue to make regular visits to the property to ensure the rules are being followed.

David Marchant, Chief Executive of Castle Point Council, praised those who helped secure the order.

He said: “The council will not tolerate nuisance and disorder in our properties.

“We obtained a closure order to prevent further serious anti-social behaviour and criminality in this premises.

“This is an excellent example of partnership working with other authorities and firms.

“We will continue to work with Essex Police and other agencies to combat anti-social behaviour and criminal behaviour.”
