POLICE have made an arrest after a video appeared on social media showing a man using racist language on a tram.

The clip showed the person using the slurs on the Bury Metrolink line on Saturday, December 7, before he left the tram at Radcliffe.

It followed last week's Manchester derby between Manchester United and Manchester City.

It appears to show a United fan saying of his rivals "tiny club, with a tiny stadium, run by P**i's with P**i money".

When he was confronted by other passengers, he said: "You like blowing up the arena do you? That's what funds you."

Today (Wednesday), officers from GMP’s Transport Unit arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.

He remains in custody to be questioned by police.

Chief Inspector Matt Bailey-Smith said: “Racism of any form is wrong and will not be tolerated in our society.

“As a Transport Unit we are determined to ensure that anyone who feels they have experienced any form of racial abuse or intimidation on public transport can contact police, with the confidence that we will act swiftly to bring those responsible to justice.”
