AN Ilkley man is taking on the toughest climb of his life when he tackles the Peñon d’Ifach- also known as Calpe Rock, in a few weeks time.

Martyn Hopson is raising money for the charity, The Principle Trust, by taking on this amazing challenge. Rising 1000ft above the Mediterranean sea, and with incredible views of the surrounding area, the Peñon d’Ifach is one of the most famous sights along the Costa Blanca coastline.

Martyn said: “My interest in climbing started at University when we saw a picture of the Matterhorn, decided to climb it and started climbing on the local Gritstone edges. I climbed several seasons in the Alps and I have maintained an interest throughout my life except for a hiccup when I was 41 and had open heart surgery.”

The Principle Trust Children’s Charity, based in Skipton, supports local underprivileged, disadvantaged and disabled children by providing free holidays and respite breaks and since the charity was founded in 2011, over 2200 children have been supported. Every single penny raised goes directly towards providing a holiday, and with five holiday homes to run, this means fundraising £55,000 each year just to keep the charity going.

Zoe Westerman, Marketing & Events Manager, The Principle Trust said: “Support like this is so important to charities like The Principle Trust, not only through fundraising efforts but also by helping us to raise awareness of the charity. This enables us to continue to create precious memories for the children and families we support.

“We are extremely grateful to Martyn and wish him every success for the toughest climb of his life!”
