A MEMBER of the public who witnessed an armed man steal from a Tesco store says he is "relieved" the offender has been caught by police.

A man carrying a knife walked into the Tesco Express store in Water Street, Radcliffe, yesterday morning and stole a chicken.

However shoppers thought the man was carrying a baby, sparking rumours on social media.

An eye-witness said: "The man came in with a knife and threatened staff.

"It looked like he was carrying a steak knife. He was saying he had a knife.

"He took a chicken and then left the store.

"It all happened within the space of a couple of minutes.

"Thankfully the staff and customers were safe.

"The police were quick to respond. The man has since been caught in Bury town centre which is a relief."

The incident shortly before 8.30am on Friday prompted a large police response.

Officers have since arrested a man on suspicion of theft in Bury town centre. He was held in custody for questioning.

Greater Manchester Police's Radcliffe team tweeted at 11am on Friday: "Arrest this morning. Many of you will be concerned about an incident when a male has come into a shop in Radcliffe with a knife and threatened staff.

"Following a search of the surrounding areas the male has been arrested and in custody. Thanks to our shopkeepers for their help."
