ESSENTIAL maintenance work is to be carried out on Bramhope’s historic Puritan Chapel.
A £3,750 grant from the Outer North West Community Committee will cover half the cost of repointing the Grade I Listed building, which dates back to 1649.
That will enable Bramhope and Carlton Parish Council, which is providing the other £3,750 that is needed, to push ahead with the scheme.
Councillor Caroline Anderson (Con, Adel & Wharfedale) said: “I am delighted the parish council has been given this grant towards the work that needs to be done to ensure the chapel does not fall into disrepair. Unfortunately, when the pointing was done many years ago the wrong cement was used and a survey made a recommendation that the mortar be replaced completely.”
Councillor Barry Anderson (Con, Adel & Wharfedale) added: “It is really important we keep the heritage of the area alive and ensure the upkeep of the building for future generations.”
