ILKLEY remembered its fallen heroes on Sunday.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Doreen Lee, led a parade along The Grove of civic dignitaries including Ilkley Town Mayor, Councillor Mark Stidworthy, The Deputy Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Mr Roger Whittaker and local and district councillors.

The parade also included veteran and serving soldiers of the British Armed Forces, cadets, guides, brownies, cubs and scouts.

Following the parade along The Grove there was a Remembrance Service and wreath laying ceremony in the Memorial Gardens, Ilkley, at 3pm.

The service attracted large crowds who turned out to pay tribute to those who laid down their lives, not only in the Great War of 1914-1918 but in all the conflicts that the people of Britain and the Commonwealth countries have fought since.

The service was led by the Rev Mike Coe with other Clergy from different faiths in Ilkley in attendance. A collection was held with all donations directly sent to the Royal British Legion.

There was a dedication to the palm tree that has been planted in dedication to all the service men and women who served in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Mediterranean.

Ilkley Town Mayor Councillor Mark Stidworthy said: "Shared acts of remembrance span the generations and remind us that family members have gone out from communities like ours to struggle, suffer and lose their lives, sometimes in far-away places, to protect the freedoms and opportunities that we now enjoy. In the decades since 1945, and even today, in 2019, they have continued to do so. In Sunday's service, people of all ages from across the town showed our shared gratitude, as we gathered to remember and honour them, and to pray for peace. I would like to thank all those who worked so hard in advance, and who took part on the day, to make sure that Ilkley provided a worthy and dignified tribute to those who have sacrificed so much."

Remembrance Services were also held in Addingham, Burley-in-Wharfedale and Menston.
