A SPECIAL history event will take place at Rawdon Library this weekend.

Visitors are being invited to bring along old photographs and documents for immediate scanning for Aireborough Historical Society’s online archive.

They will also get the chance to meet the library’s local history team and to look at the library’s collection. People taking part will be invited to try out some family history for free using the Find My Past website.

The event, from 10.30am to 12.30pm, on Saturday, October 26, will feature a display of old photographs.

The historical society is inviting the public to bring in photographs, documents and artefacts that they want to keep but would like to share with others. The items will be scanned immediately and can then be displayed on the website for everyone to enjoy.

Clive Woods from Aireborough Civic Society said: “On Saturday members of Aireborough Historical Society will be at Rawdon Library hoping that lots of us will be bringing in photographs for scanning to add to their website.

“Photos of Rawdon are especially welcome as they have far fewer than for Yeadon and Guiseley. So please look through your collections and bring some on Saturday. They can be from the 1950s, 60s, 70s up to the present day plus older photos and postcards of the area.

“There will also be a display and Local History Group members will be there to tell you about our Local History Collection.”

The society was founded in 1957 to record and preserve the history of Aireborough, which consists of Yeadon, Guiseley, Rawdon, Carlton, Hawksworth and the area which was covered by Menston Hospital

Thousands of photographs are now shared with people around the globe thanks to its scheme to archive them online.

The group can be found in the Archive Room in Yeadon Town hall every Monday from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

It also hold events on the second Thursday of each month with speakers on a variety of subjects at Guiseley Methodist Church, Orchard Way, Oxford Road. Doors open at 7pm for 7.30pm.

The next meeting is on Thursday, November 14 when Don Shaw-Bate will talk about Sammy Ledgard.

Admission is free for members and £2 for visiting non-members. The price includes refreshments.

The society also has a online shop which can be found on its website at www.aireboroughhistoricalsociety.co.uk

Aireborough Historical Society holds regular Chit Chat events - an initiative which has proved hugely popular since its launch five years ago.

The first event, in May 2014 was hailed a tremendous success after it attracted nearly 100 people who came along to see more than 90 images.
