A GEOGRAPHY teacher at West Craven High School, Barnoldswick, is spending half term in Mexico with other teachers after winning a Rainforest Alliance and Tui Care Foundation competition.
Nicola Price found out about the competition - which is designed to provide peer to peer training and a once in a lifetime development experience - on a Geography teachers’ social media forum. She registered her interest, and was tasked with teaching a Sustainable Tourism topic to students.
She worked with Year 9 students to come up with ideas for a sustainable tourism resort after researching all aspects of a tourist resort. She submitted photos and work from the project and was shocked when she received a call during the summer holidays to say she would be one of five teachers from across the UK to be heading to Mexico.
Ms Price said: “The Year 9 students really enjoyed working on the sustainable tourism project and we were really pleased with the final piece of work we submitted. It was a total shock to find out I had been chosen. I am really looking forward to travelling to Mexico and meeting the other winners before heading back with a whole range of new resources and experiences to pass on to my students.”
West Craven High School Executive Principal, Lynne Blomley said: “ This competition win really is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we can’t wait for Nicola to return from her visit with lots of tales to tell and exciting lessons to deliver to our students.”
