WORK on a long-delayed 20mph scheme in Otley will begin next month.

The town’s first 20mph zones were introduced in 2014 but a later scheme for Ashfield, to complete Otley’s coverage, was delayed due to objections.

Leeds City Council has now confirmed that work to install the infrastructure for the zone - which will include the Weston and St Davids Road estates - will begin on Monday, November 18.

Speed tables will be put in place during the first week while speed humps will be put in over subsequent weekends, when road closures will be required.

Ward Councillors Sandy Lay, Colin Campbell and Ryk Downes (all Lib Dem, Otley & Yeadon) have hailed the news.

Cllr Campbell said: “This is the final piece in the Otley 20mph jigsaw. Twenty mile per hour zones reduce accidents and, surprisingly, pollution and we have been working for over ten years to get them on residential streets in Otley.”
