AN OLD FASHIONED parade drew the crowds when Guiseley’s carnival was staged in 1968.
And memories came flooding back for many people when the pictures were recently uploaded to Aireborough Historical Society’s facebook page.
The pictures were donated to AHS by Anne North and Alan Pickles.
Photographs show the parade making its way along Otley Road as the crowds stand and watch.
The parade includes floats, majorettes, a brass band and a pipe band, which led the way. It also features Fearnley’s engineers of Castleford steam lorry.
Some of the photographs show the Primitive Methodist Chapel and schoolroom as well as the Yorkshire Rose pub.
Aireborough Historical Society archivist Carlo Harrison said: “People often remember the magnificent floats on the back of trucks in both Guiseley and Yeadon carnivals and put their absence down to the famous ‘Health and Safety’ interfering in the pleasure of the normal folk of Aireborough.”
But he said the real reason many events no longer have floats is the modern litigation culture which in turn has led to high insurance costs.
