OTLEY residents can find out more about plans to create a new youth and community centre this weekend.

Churches Together in Otley has formed a registered charity, Otley Youth and Community Centre, to oversee the project which will use the town’s Salvation Army building.

The Salvation Army, which is a partner in the scheme and supplying one of the charity’s six trustees, is providing the New Market property on a long term lease. Otley Youth and Community Centre has received a £10,000 Awards for All grant to create a business plan and consult further on the proposals.

Vicar of Otley Rev Graham Buttanshaw said: “Our purpose is to provide a youth centre on the upper floor of the building and a more general community centre downstairs, focusing on working with the most marginalised in our community.

“We have worked with the secondary school and have done an initial survey of Key Stage 3 pupils at Prince Henry’s which indicates a high level of interest in an after-school club and other activities.

“We are looking to adapt the existing building and have employed an architect to assist us.”

More details will be available during an open day at the Salvation Army building, from 10am to 2pm, on Saturday, September 14.
