High quality of entries for Addingham Show

The number of entries in the vegetable and fruit classes was lower than in recent years. This was not surprising as the weather conditions this year have made it difficult to grow quality produce, which will have resulted in some exhibitors being reluctant to put forward entries for judging. There were, however, multiple entries in most of the classes and the quality of the entries was generally good.

The flower classes were by contrast more popular and they resulted in a colourful and hugely impressive display that included dahlias, sweet peas, roses, annuals and house plants.

The increase in the number of exhibits in the floral art classes, compared to last year resulted in an attractive, quality competition, the home craft classes were popular with the “bake off” classes in particular providing the judge with a challenge to select the winners, there were more than ten entries for the jam and jelly class while the standard and range of exhibits in the various handicrafts showcased the exhibitor’s high level of skills and talent. There was a good display of photographs in two classes and a large number of colourful and attractive entries for the three children’s classes.

Thanks are due to the Association’s committee, friends, exhibitors and the judges whose hard work and support made the show a success and to the visitors who came to view the exhibits and enjoy the refreshments.

Prize winners were presented with their trophies by the Association’s President, Bill Preston; Best in Vegetables to Jeff Walbank for his perfect looking cherry tomatoes, the Best Collection of Vegetables and Most Points in Vegetables to Jeff Walbank, Best in Fruit to S Tomlinson for three attractive dessert apples, Best in Flowers to C Hollings for a stunning orchid, Best in Dahlias to Ramon Porter, Best in Roses to M Tetley, Best in Sweet Peas to Bill Preston, Best in Floral Art to Alexis McCowan for her inventive and attractive entry within a seashell, Best for a Handtied Bouquet to Natalie Smith, Best in Homecraft to Wendy Green for her clever and detailed laundry model within a empty detergent bottle, Most points in Homecraft to Marion Harding, Best Photograph to Heather Maud, Best in Children’s section to Harry Mayo and for the Most Points in the Show to Jeff Walbank.

The Parish Council’s trophies were presented for Best Allotment to David Park and for Best Commercial Frontage to The Fleece. Addingham Garden Friends awards were made for Best Front Garden to Tony and Dawn Brady and for Best Hanging Basket to L Parish.

The Association are keen to encourage more competitors to enter their shows. Potential exhibitors are reminded that to enter you do not need to live in Addingham, have an allotment or even a garden to take part. This year, for the first time, ‘Novice’ classes were introduced in the vegetable, fruit and flower sections with the intention to encourage potential new exhibitors to participate in the show for the first time and then, hopefully, become regular participants in the future. It was encouraging for the future of the show that there were a number of entries for these classes.
