BUTTERSHAW St Paul’s are hosting a memorial game in honour of their former junior coach Derek Wharf.

The 30-overs-per-side match will be on Sunday, August 25 (12.30pm) and will feature many of the ex-juniors that Derek coached, including his son Alex, the former Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Glamorgan and England all-rounder who is also an international umpire.

It is also hoped that veterans such as Bob Cull will play in memory of the 79-year-old, who died in April and did so many things.

Steve Brooke, one of Wharf’s under-18 Buttershaw colleagues in their undefeated season of 1987, said: “We hope that Alex will both play and umpire.

“Derek, who was a jack of all trades, is a legend at St Paul’s and has brought hundreds of kids through to senior cricket, not only teaching them about cricket but life skills as well.”

Derek also played for Woodlands as a junior and senior, where he was a member of their 1963 Waddilove Trophy-winning team, and Shelf in the Bradford Central League.

Admission by programme is £2 for adults and £1 for under-16s and money raised will go towards Alzheimer’s UK.

There will be a raffle, tombola, food and live music and the bar will be open.
