EXTINCTION Rebellion is to stage five days of action in Leeds city centre next week.

Climate campaigners will target the financial sector during the protest which starts at 10am on Monday, July 15. People from across the area will gather at Leeds City Square to demand that the financial sector stops financing the fossil fuel industry.

Organisers say key sites will be disrupted “with demands for truth and immediate action to prevent climate chaos and repair the world’s crumbling ecosystems.”

The five-day protest will form part of the ‘Summer Uprising’ across England, Scotland and Wales. Synchronised actions will also be taking place in Cardiff, London, Bristol and Glasgow.

Spokesman Alex Evans, who lives near Otley, said: “As a parent with young children, I’m deeply scared about the kind of future our kids will inherit. It feels like we’ve had decades of everyone waiting for someone else to do something about climate change - now we’re out of time and can all see the signs of climate breakdown all around us. I’m involved in Extinction Rebellion because I want government, big banks and businesses to recognise that this is an emergency and act now.”
