THE St Mary’s Menston intermediate girls’ athletics team became champions of Leeds last week, winning the Leeds Schools’ Athletics Association finals.

Thirty-six secondary schools from across the city started the competition which, through qualifying, was narrowed down to the best eight schools to take part in the finals at South Leeds Stadium.

Competing against GSAL, Carr Manor, Corpus Christi, Morley, Woodkirk, Guiseley and Abbey Grange, the girls had a good night were run away leaders by the time the competition finished.

Craig Thornton, faculty leader of PE and sport at St Mary’s, said: “This has been another outstanding season for our inter-girls’ athletics team.

"Their results epitomise a thorough team performance with every single athlete making highly valuable contributions throughout the entire competition.

"It was a privilege to see all the girls hard work and dedication pay off with the Leeds Athletics Championship title.

"They have represented themselves and St Mary's magnificently, both on and off the track.

"We look forward to next year’s athletics season with excitement and anticipation to see if we can replicate this level of performance.”
