DIETICIANS at Airedale Hospital marked a national campaign by highlighting the work they carry out.

Team members staged an information stall at the Steeton hospital.

The venture was part of National Dietitians’ Week, which this year focussed as its theme on the diversity of roles within the profession.

As well as facts about the variety of jobs, the information stall included diet and nutrition advice, and there was a ‘sugar cube’ quiz.

Morrisons supermarket in Skipton sponsored the stall, providing fruit and a prize for the quiz.

Nick Burgin – specialist nutrition support dietitian and acute team leader at Airedale Hospital – says dietitians work across a wide range of fields and support patients with a host of medical conditions including obesity, malnutrition, cancer, renal disease, stroke, HIV, diabetes, dementia and eating disorders.

He added: “It’s really important that people know where to turn to receive the correct diet and nutrition information.

“Qualified dietitians can provide advice and support in all aspects of nutrition within the hospital and out in the community.

“The dietitians at Airedale work with malnourished and unwell patients on wards, provide important education for those with diabetes, help children with diet and nutrition, hold clinics in local GP practices and work alongside a whole range of healthcare professionals to provide a comprehensive service.”

Patients can be referred to see a dietitian through their GP practice, from a doctor, nurse or other healthcare professional.
