OTLEY Sailing Club has added another prestigious award to its collection.

The club has been presented with the Duke of York Community Initiative Award in recognition of its Sailfree programme. The volunteer-run scheme allows young people with disabilities and complex learning needs to enjoy the sport.

Otley Commodore Magnus McDonald and three volunteers collected the club’s award from Prince Andrew, Duke of York at a recent ceremony at Catterick Garrison. Mr McDonald said: “It was a great honour to meet His Royal Highness and accept this award on behalf of all the volunteers.

“Otley Sailing Club is entirely run by volunteers, with a dedicated team of more than 30 involved in running Sailfree. Sailfree runs four days a week during term time, from April to October, with over 2,700 sessions held in the last year. It’s an incredibly rewarding scheme for the volunteers and participants.”
