GIRLS were encouraged to get into rugby during a development day for the sport at Woodhouse Grove School in Apperley Bridge.

A total of 65 girls attended the event, which was open to pupils from years five and six. Young players attended from Ghyll Royd School, Ilkley, Lady Lane Park School, Bingley and Woodhouse Grove’s Junior School, Brontë House.

The girls were coached by specialist Woodhouse Grove staff with support and help from Yorkshire Carnegie Academy and Community. They developed their basic rugby skills and enjoyed games of tag.

Coach Toby Waterhouse said:”The girls have been outstanding. We have taken the skills that they already had in abundance from playing other sports at their current schools, put a rugby ball into their hands, coached them in the basic laws of rugby and the progress they’ve shown in just one day has been incredible.”
