CAMPAIGNERS from Wharfedale joined the mass Put It To The People march in London.

The rally, demanding a second referendum on Brexit, attracted an estimated one million voters on Saturday, March 23.

It followed the launch of an online petition calling on the Government to revoke Article 50, which has been signed by more than five and a half million people.

Among those taking part were MP Alex Sobel (Lab, Leeds North West) and his Liberal Democrat rival, Parliamentary candidate* Kamran Hussain, who both spoke.

Some Otley Town Councillors, including Linda Hoare and Jo Allen (both Lib Dem, West Chevin) also headed south for the protest.

Mr Sobel, who has been calling for a new referendum, told the crowd: “Theresa May last week said she was speaking directly to the people. They responded by coming out onto the streets and signing the revoke Article 50 petition in their millions.

“No one supports her deal. It’s time to give the people the final say on Brexit.”

Constituent Katie Hughes thanked the MP for taking part. She said: “After months of frustration, anger and dismay at the chaos and incompetence in government, it was an amazing day.

“We shuffled along together, singing and chatting with people who came from all over the country to say ‘this madness has to stop’.”

Speaking on social media later, Mr Sobel added: “Pleased to speak with so many people from Leeds North West and all over the country as well as on the Left Stage with Clive Lewis MP and Caroline Lucas, amongst others.

“The Prime Minister has run out of road, it is time we give the people a final say.”

Mr Hussain said: “There were people from all walks of life and from all parts of the UK. We were well represented from Leeds and I had the privilege of addressing the crowds that had gathered.

“The march took place at the same time as people were signing an online petition to revoke article 50.

“More than five and a half million people have signed this petition including over 10,000 from Leeds North West. Despite this the Leader of the Opposition, Jeremy Corbyn, failed to show up.”

Cllr Hoare said: “I went along to the march with my whole family including my husband, Professor Melvin Hoare from the University of Leeds, who works alongside many colleagues from around Europe.

“We travelled by coach as part of our Leeds North West Liberal Democrats group, led by Kamran. The atmosphere was absolutely terrific, with different parties all happily joining together with one intention - to have our voices heard and to ask for a people’s vote.”
