YOUNG GUNS Harry Brook and Matthew Waite shone as Yorkshire eased to a 208-run victory over Cardiff MCC Universities in a 50-over friendly in Potchefstroom today.

Both having spent their winter playing grade cricket in Sydney, Burley-in-Wharfedale's Brook hit a sparkling hundred and Waite claimed four wickets for four runs with the new ball at the Senwes Park international ground.

Yorkshire amassed 368-9 as Yeadon's Jordan Thompson, the third White Rose player to have wintered in Australia’s Harbour City, also chipped in with an unbeaten 64 under sunny skies.

He shared an amazing unbroken partnership of 79 in nine overs for the 10th wicket with fast bowler Jared Warner (24 not out) after the county had earlier stumbled from 201-2 to 289-9.

Brook finished with 101 off 82 balls before the students were bowled out for 160, which also included three wickets for Mat Pillans.

Waite finished with 4-8 from five overs and said: “It came out nicely.

“Obviously I’ve been away this winter and outdoors, which is probably an advantage compared to some of the other lads. But it went well for everyone, Brooky with a hundred, Tommo 60 odd and Mat Pillans bowling quick.

“It’s been a good start for us.”

Waite struck with his first ball at the start of the second over, getting opener Joseph Ludlow caught at backward point following a miscued drive.

He then claimed two wickets lbw and another caught behind courtesy of extra bounce from just short of a good length.

“I’ve never taken the new white ball,” he explained.

“I’ve opened the bowling quite a bit in the Academy and second team, but not in the first team.

“But Rich Pyrah said to me, ‘If anyone’s going to swing it, it’s you’. Luckily it happened.”

Brook came in at number three after the loss of Adam Lyth and shared a century stand with Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who made 52.

Brook hit a century on tour last year in a two-day match against Notts and reached three figures again off 81 balls with a cut boundary.

He dominated a Cardiff attack who later fought back strongly as leg-spinner Mujahid Ilyas claimed 3-62 from 10 overs.

Brook fell the ball after reaching his ton - the start of the mid-innings stutter - but all-rounder Thompson and fast bowler Warner, who has often opened the batting in club cricket, later reignited the innings in spectacular fashion.

Thompson dominated a partnership which sucked the life out of the Welsh side, reaching 50 off 35 balls with four sixes. He went on to hit five in all.

If Cardiff weren’t already under the cosh, Waite made sure with his quick fire four-for, leaving the score at 22-4 in the eighth over.

Pillans then struck twice in as many balls in the 12th as Cardiff slipped to 33-6, including getting fellow South African Lorenzo Machado caught and bowled following a miscued pull.

Cardiff did at least manage to recover from 41-7 as Oskar Kolk hit an unbeaten 55 from number six. But Karl Carver, Josh Poysden and Warner all claimed a wicket apiece.

Yorkshire return to action on Friday when they face Notts at the same venue. They also face Durham early next week.

“We want to build on it now in the two-dayers, getting more overs under our belts,” added Waite. “Personally, I’d like to carry on like I have done in this game.”
