OTLEY and Yeadon’s ward councillors are urging people to report fly-tipping.

Statistics released by Leeds City Council via the Data Mill North website show that the authority received more than 52,000 complaints about the issue during 2017 and 2018.

Local wards were not among the worst affected, with Otley and Yeadon receiving a relatively modest total of 365 flytipping reports* over the period.

Councillors Ryk Downes, Colin Campbell and Sandy Lay, however, say local residents need to help the council keep on top of the problem.

Cllr Downes said: “With only one in 450 of these criminal acts ending up in court we are urging residents to help fight back by reporting this activity.”

Fly-tipping incidents can be reported online at www.leeds.gov.uk/residents/environmental-health/flytipping-and-waste-issues .

The councillors believe that local fly-tipping has increased since charges for certain building and DIY waste were introduced at local tips in February, 2018.

*Some 1,030 reports of fly-tipping were made in Adel and Wharfedale while Horsforth had 480 and Guiseley and Rawdon 288. The worst affected ward in Leeds, Gipton and Harehills, received 15,006 complaints.
