A WHARFEDALE MP has signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment.
By doing so Alex Sobel (Lab, Leeds North West) pledged to support Holocaust Memorial Day, honour those who were murdered during the Holocaust, and pay tribute to the educational work carried out by survivors.
The Day is marked on January 27 each year - the anniversary of the liberation of the former Nazi concentration and death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau. This year the theme of the commemorations was Torn from Home.
Mr Sobel said: “At the start of the Second World War my family was forced to flee from Poland and Lithuania to escape Nazi genocide, so remembering the Holocaust is deeply personal to me.
“Holocaust Memorial Day is an important opportunity for people from Leeds North West and across the country to reflect on the tragic events of the Holocaust.
“As the Holocaust moves from living history to ‘just’ history, it becomes ever more important that we take the time to remember the victims and pay tribute to the survivors.” The MP also spoke at the Holocaust Memorial Day debate in Parliament.
