PLANS to rebuild Guiseley School are set to get the go-ahead tomorrow.

The existing school will be almost completely demolished and replaced with two new three storey buildings if planners accept the recommendation to approve the scheme.

Work at the Fieldhead Road site is set to start next month and is expected to be completed in 2021.

The new scheme does not involve any increase in pupil capacity, which currently stands at 1,450. But it will see an increase in staff parking from 94 to 145 spaces.

Leeds City Council’s South and West Plans Panel will consider a recommendation to approve the scheme subject to a number of conditions.

The application has been brought forward under the Priority Schools Building Programme, managed by the Department for Education, to deal with schools in the worst condition.

A report to the panel says: “In terms of the proposed timetable for delivery, the programme is extremely challenging.”

It adds: “The works are split into various elements to minimise disruption to the school’s day to day activities and keeping it operational throughout this period.”

Eighty people have written to Leeds City Council in support of the scheme on the grounds that the existing buildings are dilapidated and not fit for purpose. Twenty three people have lodged objections to the plans.
