LOCAL businesses are being invited to sign up for Refill Otley.

The Town Council voted last autumn to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the organisation - City to Sea - that runs the national campaign.

Refill aims to reduce plastic waste by encouraging firms and communities to provide places where people can fill up bottles with tap water, free of charge.

Otley council plans to formally launch Refill Otley in a few months but in the meantime it is working to build participation and awareness.

Council Chair Councillor Ray Georgeson (Lib Dem, Danefield) said: “Any shop or other premises willing to refill people’s water bottles with tap water, to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic bottles, can sign up to be part of the Refill scheme.

“Signage and stickers will be made available and their participation will also feature on the Refill app, which tells you where the nearest refill station is anywhere in the UK where there are participants.

“It’s such a simple yet effective idea and we are delighted to play our part.”

The council is also in the early stages of exploring the idea of installing at least one drinking water fountain somewhere in town. And it is selling My Otley Refill bottles, available in a range of colours, from its base at Otley Core, on Orchard Gate.

Two types of bottle are on sale - a Chilly’s branded model that keeps drinks hot or cold, and a camping/walking style metal water bottle.
