A TOTAL of £289.58 was raised for the Candlelighters children’s cancer charity at Hawksworth village’s Celebration of Christmas evening held on Wednesday December 12 at the chapel and followed up by carol singing around the village on Monday evening.

Both events were organised by Hazel Goodwin who has supported the Candlelighters in this way for many decades. Many at the chapel event were moved when singing a beautiful carol called In the Stillness of the Night, partly as it had been written (many years ago) by current villager Brad Bradshaw.

The village is grateful to Councillor Graham Latty for paying out of his Members Improvement in the Community and the Environment (MICE) money for the electrical point to enable the lighting of the the village Christmas tree which is at the bottom of Odda Lane.

A raffle was held at the recent village Christmas dinner to help pay for the hire of lights this year but a fund raising party is planned to raise money towards the village buying it’s own lights.

The area where the tree is has recently been renamed Milton Corner in honour of former villager Milton Booth who died in February at the age of 94.

Milton was instrumental in helping make the village look as pleasant as it does today and he also led the team to several years of success in Yorkshire in Bloom in the 1990s.
