BURLEY Library will once again open for two hours on Christmas Day to offer a festive experience for anyone who would like some warm and welcoming company.

Doors will open from 2pm until 4pm, and visitors will enjoy quizzes, music and children’s activities as well as complimentary mince pies, Christmas cake and tea and coffee. The library will be open to borrow, return and renew books.

This will be the second year of opening. Last year Rachael Robinson (who lead the very successful playground project) took the lead and around 150 people came into the library and had a wonderful time with live music from Carys Crow and a surprise visit from Ken Pickles playing the bagpipes.

A host of volunteers have again rallied around to set up a Christmas treat. Residents have pledged to put up posters, supply decorations and spread the word to people for whom Christmas Day might be like any other. Particular thanks are due to Lynda Forbes-Wakes of LFW Podiatry for the design and printing of the posters and flyers.

Although kind-hearted locals have already pledged most of the items needed for the day, more donations of mince pies and Christmas cake would be welcome. Anything left over will be donated to a local homeless project. If you have any queries or need any further information, please call parish councillor and library volunteer Niccola Swan on 07929 509229.

Niccola Swan, who has organised this year’s event said: “It was such a lovely event last year.

“Lots of people came and we had a lot of fun. This year, people had been asking if we were going to do it again and so we just felt we had to!

“It’ll be lovely to welcome more people into our very special community library on Christmas Day.”

Burley Library is now run by Burley-in-Wharfedale Parish Council. The hard work of the paid librarian and children’s organiser plus the immense support of a team of volunteers has seen it become a real community hub, with many weekly activities.
