BURLEY Oaks Primary School took part in a collaborative project to remember the end of WW1. Pupils were asked to search their own family histories to find names of those they might like to remember from the First or Second World Wars. Many children brought in names and small pieces of information.

Isaac, eight and Isabel, five, brought in their Great Grandfather’s name; Stafford Keith, along with his army jacket and his hat bearing the ribbon and badge of the Royal Scots. Inside the breast pocket of the jacket was the bible. They also brought in photographs: Stafford proudly wearing his uniform, which was taken for his sweetheart to keep, and one taken on his wedding day – Christmas Day 1917. Stafford survived the war and is warmly remembered by his family.

He died in 1968. The children were very proud to share his story.

Every class and child in the school took part in the school project to recreate the British Legion message #THANKYOU100, using many different art techniques. Children wrote the name of their family member in the centre of their own poppy.

Joan Jones, Year One teacher and art leader said: “It was a very thought provoking day for all and has resulted in the creation of a beautiful piece of art to be enjoyed every time people pass through school.”
