WHARFEDALE Tackles Plastic has held its first public litter pick on Ilkley Moor.

Forty volunteers showed up to help fill bags with rubbish which was then taken away by Bradford Council.

Organisers Ros Brown, Anne Cuthbertson and Martin Nash said they were delighted with the response.

“It was fantastic to have a surprise turn out of students from Ilkley Grammar School and to find some of the younger children equipped with their own mini litter grabbers,” Anne added.

Following on from the success of the morning the group is planning to hold more public litter picks in 2019.

Since its formation earlier this year Wharfedale Tackles Plastic has organised a number of activities to reduce the amount of single use plastic in the area. The group has built support among local businesses for a water bottle refill scheme in Ilkley, held a monthly stall at the invitation of Real Food Ilkley Market to provide information for residents and produced an action plan for the first year of their work with support from Cllr Mark Stidworthy from Ilkley Town Council.

The group also supported Ilkley Civic Society’s public meeting in October - What can we recycle? - led by the recycling team from Bradford Council. To get involved contact Wharfedale Tackles Plastic via the group’s Facebook page or email wharfedaletp@gmail.com
