UNDERPRIVILEGED children will be helped to play sport after a rugby club’s appeal for second hand kit.

Aireborough RUFC, which has more than 250 players, made an appeal for kit and equipment following registration with The Lords Taverner’s Charity in June.

All of the donated goods will be collected by the charity and distributed internationally to poor communities over the coming weeks.

Items donated so far include cricket bats, rugby and football kits, boots and clothing.

Senior players Kris Brook, Tim Baxter and Chris Chapman have been collating the donations ready for collection.

Tim, who is club captain and assistant leader of the project said: “We couldn’t be happier with the amount of people that have come forward with donations. We fully support the work Lords Taverner’s do and we are delighted to have been able to help.”

Club PR and comms manager Gemma Birbeck added: “Week in, week out we witness all of our Junior members benefitting from being part of a team and playing rugby, so as a club we want to help others do the same. Sadly, resources and funding stand in the way for some but by donating kit and equipment it opens up a pathway for them to be part of something special.”
