A PUB has credited the Otley area’s ‘overwhelming’ community spirit for allowing it to stage Bonfire Night celebrations after vandals struck.
The Roebuck, at Newall with Clifton, was set to mark November 5 in traditional style before someone sabotaged the preparations by setting alight its bonfire at 3am on Monday.
The inn declared its bonfire and fireworks evening cancelled - but was then inundated with offers of help.
Despite only having a matter of hours to work with, local workmen and residents turned up with enough wood to create another big fire which was lit, as scheduled, at 6pm.
The Roebuck’s manager, Kirstie Hymers, said: “People were absolutely fantastic, I’m still so amazed by all the support. We were really busy on Monday night - I think most of Otley was there!”
