DOZENS of Otley residents have sought follow-up action following an advice session on household safety.

Information about home insurance, fire and crime prevention measures and more were given at a drop-in event at the town council's Otley Core base on August 22.

The session was organised by Town Councillor Peter Jackson (Lib Dem, Ashfield) following two recent fires in Otley that left the homeowners without most of their possessions.

Representatives from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, West Yorkshire Police, estate agents Dale Eddison and Leeds City Council's Housing Services all took part.

Cllr Jackson said: "I would like to thank the organisations for attending to provide vital information in their field for home safety and security.

"Although the session itself was poorly attended I am pleased with the outcome of follow-on enquiries.

"To date 20 residents have asked for a fire safety inspection on their property while nine have requested a visit from the police to advise on their door locks, including on outbuildings.

"Five private home owners have also asked for their current home building and contents insurance to be looked at to ensure they have the best cover - and a staggering 15 council tenants have enquired about the council's contents insurance scheme, with 12 taking advantage of the cost being added to their weekly rent.

"I am very pleased that so many residents of Otley have taken advantage of this free advice."

Leaflets about smoke alarms, household insurance, door locks and more, meanwhile, are available from Otley Core, on Orchard Gate.

Cllr Jackson is grateful to the council staff at the Core for providing the room for the event along with refreshments.
