ILKLEY Flower, Produce and Craft Show celebrated its 65th year with entries and visitor numbers up on previous years.

A show spokesman said: “This was a good Show. Our President’s visit (Alan Titchmarsh) in the summer and encouraging message in the schedule undoubtedly inspired newcomers to take part in the Show.

“Ilkley has a deep well of creative talent; this was remarked upon by Sir Rodney Brooke, President of the Manor House Trust, as he was invited by Chairman of the Show Annette Ackroyd to open proceedings; this he did with a great flourish. The afternoon fairly bowled along with something for everyone. It was encouraging to see several new entrants in the Fruit and Vegetable classes. There were elegant floral set pieces contrasting with informal jam jars of herbs and decorated hats. The arrangements in tea cups and saucers were delightful. In the Floral Art, a record was set by three generations, grandmother, mother and daughter, each winning a first prize. Water colours and mixed media art works were plentifully and of a high standard, as were the entries in the photography section. Jams resembling jewels caught the eye as did the mouthwatering cakes. The different breads were inviting; note a first time entrant won the top prize in this class. Craft work was exceptional, with patchwork being particularly impressive.

“The entries which stole the Show were the models of the Gruffalo made by the under fours. Committee member Margaret Metcalf organised this with permission from Macmillan Publishing, bringing to fruition her idea of involving younger children in the Show. The display stand was designed and made by John Hall, another committee member. The afternoon closed with the presentation of prizes by Ilkley Town Mayor, Councillor Steve Butler assisted by Councillor Jennifer Souter and our Chairman, Annette Ackroyd.

“The Chairman and Committee wish to thank Ilkley Town Council, Audley Clevedon, Lishmans, our advertisers and the staff of the Clarke Foley Centre who all helped to make the occasion such a success. Finally, a huge thank you to all the entrants and visitors alike, for without you there would not be a Show. We look forward to seeing you and your friends next year, 2019.”
