THE wife of a Burley-in-Wharfedale man who is undergoing life-saving cancer treatment in Istanbul says he is responding well.

Michael Hardisty - known as Bud - was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer which had spread to his liver on November 7 last year.

The 53-year-old, who is a gardening contractor working across the Wharfe Valley, had been receiving palliative chemotherapy at Airedale Hospital but even with this treatment doctors gave him just nine to 12 months to live.

His family and friends, including wife Justine, 46, and sons 13-year-old William and Joshua, 21, of Burley-in-Wharfedale launched a fundraising appeal in a bid to send Bud for treatment in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Chemothermia Oncology Centre has been reporting fantastic results using a combination of chemotherapy, oxygen therapy and thermia treatment.

Bud needs £50,000 to undergo the treatment and the local community has already raised £26,158.

However, as his treatment continues a fresh appeal has gone out for the support to continue.

On Thursday last week Justine posted an update on Facebook about how the treatment is going.

She said: “We had his scan results yesterday which showed there is no longer any active cancer in his pancreas and his liver that was 70 per cent full of the pancreatic cancer that had spread with it being picked up too late has reduced by 50 per cent.

“We are so happy and positive for the future. We now need to try and raise as much money as possible to be able to carry on with the treatment to clear his liver.”

On Monday the ChemoThermia Oncology Center posted a video on YouTube in which Michael explains his experience of the clinic.

In it he explains how much fitter and healthier he feels and that even his hair is coming back.

He says the NHS in the UK had written him off but the “fantastic team” at the ChemoThermia Oncology Center have given him hope.

He says: “Up to present it has been working really well and I feel really well. I have a lot of support from the team. I would like to say that my only regret is that we didn’t come earlier.”

He adds: “I am so glad that we found this and if anyone is out there suffering, particularly with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and they have been written off , don’t think that it is the end.”

A lot of fundraising has been taking place to help Michael continue his treatment. Events have included a Three Peaks walk, a cycle along the Liverpool to Leeds canal and events at Burley Social Club.
