THE theme of Saturday’s Addingham Gala was ‘Kaleidoscope: Carnival of Colour’ and it saw village groups parading down Main Street as rainbow trolls, harlequin clowns, tropical butterflies, swinging sixties and an array of other colourful extravaganzas. In true carnival style, the parade was led by the catchy beats of Leeds Samba band, Undios do Ritmo.
Judging this year’s parade was recently retired couple of Addingham Fisheries, David and Sandra Allott and parish councillor, Catherine Coates. First place was awarded to Addingham Pre-school for their colourful aquatic life display adored with rainbow fish and dazzling mermaids. Second place went to Addingham Guides who flew down the village as tropical birds of paradise accompanied by a large home-crafted flying bird. Third place was awarded to the multi-coloured wigged group - Addingham Scouts for their take on Over the Rainbow. The crowds followed the parade where they were warmly welcomed by compere and scoutmaster Paul Jennings.
The outgoing 2017 Gala Queen, Evelyn Truluck, crowned the new 2018 Gala Queen, Charlotte Turner. Charlotte went on to deliver her speech to the crowds and officially open the Gala. Her first role was to judge the fancy dress competition where Best in Show was awarded to rainbow troll twins, Sophie and Lexi.
The Ermysted’s Big Band made things go with a swing, and, in a new addition the local Beer Festival organisers provided welcome cold beverages to a hot crowd. Villagers and visitors supported the stalls and activities on the field and in the marquee watched the dog show where Best in Show went to a labradoodle called Ruby.
Ilkley Gym Club put on a fantastic demonstration of agility in the main arena. In addition there was a colourful kite display led by Alan Poxon, who showcased a number of kites as well as teaching children the art of making and flying.
The annual Tug of War was in memory of local resident, Paul Gaunt, who loved the event. Boys versed girls in a battle of strength with girls taking victory for the third consecutive year.
Local MP, John Grogan, later launched a field of fell runners on their five mile return dash to the top of Beamsley Beacon. The children’s races were a success with children from as young as two years old competing to win a medal.
Addingham Gala Committee is a small group of people who would like to thank the many helpers on the run up and on the day who help make the event a success. “We would like to thank all local people for helping with road closures, Ilkley Harriers for organising the fell race route, and the Parish Council, local businesses and other sponsors for their generous support again this year,” said a spokesperon.
