STUDENTS and staff at Ilkley Grammar School are celebrating impressive GCSE results following on from last week's record-breaking A-levels.

More than 35 per cent of all GCSE entries were achieved at A*-A/7, which is 15 per cent about the national average, with 87 per cent at A*-C/4, 21 per cent above national average.

The results include for the first time the new, more challenging GCSE examinations with numerical grades awarded from 9 to 1 in mathematics, English Language and English Literature.

Headteacher Helen Williams said despite the more demanding nature of the new GCSEs, IGS students have risen to the challenge - with 35 entries awarded at the very highest new Grade 9 standard and 42 per cent of students in English and 34 per cent in mathematics achieving top grades, defined nationally as grades 9 to 7.

Eighty-one per cent of all students achieved the new 'strong pass' at grade 5 in English with 69 per cent reaching the grade in mathematics.

Ms Williams said this year’s national changes made direct comparisons with previous results difficult, but it was clear that IGS had consolidated its strong performance.

A total of 63 per cent achieved the new strong pass in the basics measure of a grade 5+ in maths and English, with 86 per cent achieving this at a 'standard pass' which is based on grade 4+. The percentage achieving the old headline measure of 5A*-C/9-4 including English and maths was the highest in the school’s history at 84 per cent.

Twenty two students achieved a full sweep of A/A* grades or equivalent in all of their GCSE qualifications.Top performers include: Joseph Haigh: 3 grade 9s, 6 A*grades and 1 A. Jasper Evans: 2 grade 9s, 8 A*grades and 1 A. Jamie Spiller: 1 grade 9, 1 grade 8, 7 A* grades and 1 grade 7. Matthew Hall: 1 grade 9, 2 grade 8s and 7 A* grades. Harvey Sykes: 1 grade 9, 2 grade 8s, 6 A* grades and 1 grade A. Esme Pearce: 2 grade 9s, 1 grade 7 and 6 A* grades. Nisha Cant: 1 grade 9, 1 grade 8, 5 A* grades and 2 grades at 7/A.

The school, which has a comprehensive intake and an emphasis on Personal Best, says it is equally proud of the large number of students who exceeded their targets across the curriculum. Other students mentioned for outstanding achievements are - Ceri Smith, Kai Wenek, Bea Waller, Sean Rose, Oscar Street, Ayman Siraj-Gill, Natasha Cheater, Laura Thompson, Isobel Tetley and Molly Settle.

Ms Williams said: "Once again we are all very proud of the achievements of our students, who never fail to impress. This year has been a particularly challenging one for this cohort to deal with, but once again IGS’s results have outstripped national on many measures, which is a fantastic achievement for all involved. It will be a few weeks yet before we know what our headline Progress 8 score will be, but given the outstanding raw results achieved by our students today, we are confident that this will be yet another strong outcome for IGS. Well done and thank you to everyone on today’s results – what a fantastic end to the year for the Class of 2017."
