A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD boy, who choked on a toy, died in Otley as a result of a tragic accident, a coroner ruled today.
Joseph Lightowler swallowed the plastic Aladdin arm, which blocked his airways. He died the same day despite efforts from his family and medical staff to revive him.
A Bradford inquest heard Joseph, from Bingley, died from a brain injury due to cardiac arrest after swallowing the toy.
Assistant coroner, Oliver Longstaff, said the boy had died due to a tragic accident and described it as every parent's worst nightmare.
The hearing was told an emergency ambulance had been dispatched to East Chevin Road in Otley last December, but was stood down and then resent when Joseph's parents drove him to Wharfedale Hospital.
But the assistant coroner said the effect of swallowing the toy had been immediate and catastrophic, and Joseph's death had been inevitable from the outset.
l The full inquest report will appear later today
